Nowhere on Earth does peace and tranquility exist quite like the Lot region of south-west France – not that you’d realise it if you saw everything that has been going on at Chateau de Laumiere recently.
A new arrival brought preparations for our first holiday guests of the year to a temporary halt this week, as one of the chateau’s pregnant mares gave birth to a beautiful new foal a week earlier than expected.
It was a delightful surprise for us – and hopefully it will be just as wonderful for our guests.
They come to Chateau de Laumiere for a break from the real world – to rest and relax, to ride a horse along some of the region’s hundreds of miles of perfect trekking trails; to recharge their batteries, so they’re ready to return to their real lives refreshed and raring to go.
To make sure everything’s perfect when the first guests of the year arrive we’ve been cleaning the bedrooms, getting the pool ready, preparing the grounds, planning our delicious home-cooked meals, ensuring all the light bulbs work and all those other little unseen behind-the-scenes things that go to make a holiday perfect without anyone really knowing it.
Chris has been out in the garden, planting vegetables for our guests later in the summer. At the start of this week there were still in pots on almost every window sill in the chateau. Sadly, they won’t be quite ready for our first guests – but we’re pretty close to self-sufficient for most of the season.
And, Let’s Not Forget the Horses
When we first moved into the chateau in 2003, we had five horses. Now, with our early arrival we have 20 – and we’re expecting the arrival of two more new foals very soon.
Horses need looking after every day, rain or shine – but they are our family and we love them dearly. That we get to share them with our holidaying guests every summer is a bonus.
On top of all this, we’ve just launched the new Chateau de Laumiere website. We hope you like it. You’ll find everything you need to know about holidays and horse-riding here – from the luxurious and romantic accommodation you can only find in a French chateau built in 1608, to the fine meals on offer here or at our favourite restaurants, and everything in between.
Our new website also comes with this blog. We’ll post regular news and updates from Lot. Please join us. And we look forward to, hopefully, welcoming you to here soon.
